This 13-part TV series takes place in the year 0083 of the Universal Century, between the end of the original Gundam and the sequel Gundam Z. When Zeon rebels strike a Federation base, stealing a prototype Gundam suit armed with a nuclear warhead, young ensign Kou Uraki has to battle the Zeon hero of the One Year War, Anavel Gato, a.k.a. “the Nightmare of Solomon.” Although he demonstrates remarkable piloting skills, Kuo is searching for something to believe in and/or a mentor, although he gets unexpected support from systems engineer Nina Purpleton. Fighting against the Zeon is preferable to fighting beside the obnoxious Lieutenant Bernard Monsha, the leader of the senior Federation pilots. Kuo is a less complex and compelling character than Lieutenant Shiro Amada in 08th MS Team, but he displays more depth than the typical mecha jockey. Contains the first four episodes. The not-so-glam side of rock is on defiant display in Prey for Rock & Roll, another well-cast Gina Gershon flick (after Showgirls and Bound) poised for cult-favorite status. Serving as co producer and star, Gershon (looking hotter than ever at age 41) is note-for-note perfect as Jacki, the tattoo-clad, pushing-40 leader of Clam Dandys, an L.A.-based all-girl rock band that’s never risen above low-paying club gigs despite Jacki’s 20-year experience as a wannabe rock star. On the verge of a possible recording contract, the band is close-knit but troubled: ace bassist Tracy (Drea de Matteo, from The Sopranos) has a nasty boyfriend and a drug-and-alcohol problem, while lead guitarist Faith (Lori Petty) and her lover, the band’s drummer Sally (Shelly Cole) cope with the unexpected arrival of Sally’s ex-con brother Animal (Marc Blucas), an unlikely virgin who’s attracted to Jacki. Based on a play by rocker Cheri Lovedog (who wrote and performed most of the band’s ‘80-styled girl-punk music, with Gershon ably handling lead vocals), this down-and-dirty chick flick falls prey to forced melodrama and obligatory tragedy, but it looks, feels, and sounds remarkably authentic, and the cast is terrific. Easily recommended despite its faults, Prey is a feminist cautionary tale for anyone who chooses rock & roll not merely as a profession, but a lifestyle that can’t be denied. –Jeff Shannon

In this wicked thriller from 1992, director Brian De Palma shamelessly borrows from Alfred Hitchcock (as usual) and several other filmmakers to create a shock-a-thon that plays like a film buff’s highlight reel from a dozen different thrillers. Taken on those terms it’s a lot of fun to watch (though not for the faint-hearted), and multiple maniac roles for John Lithgow make it an irresistible shocker that isn’t afraid to wallow in its own excess. Lithgow not only plays the evil Dr. Carter Nix, who is performing strange experiments on children, but he also plays the doctor’s twin sons, Josh and Cain, who kidnap kids and bring them to their father’s laboratory. Lolita Davidovich is a mother whose child has been abducted, but she won’t give up without a fight. If this sounds repulsive, rest assured that De Palma focuses on the battle between the mother and the nefarious twins (this isn’t a film about gratuitous child abuse), and film students will delight in the allusions to Hitchcock, Michael Powell’s Peeping Tom, and Orson Welles’s Touch of Evil, among others. It never makes much sense or adds up to anything truly satisfying, but thanks to Lithgow’s wild performances Raising Cain is the kind of over-the-top thriller that grabs you for 95 minutes and holds you in its entertaining grip. –Jeff Shannon

Rainer Werner Fassbinder had 12 features under his belt when he finally found success at home and earned international acclaim for The Merchant of Four Seasons. Hans Hirschmüller stars as Hans, who returns from a stint in the French Foreign Legion with high hopes and grand plans for the “economic miracle” of 1950s Germany. Fired from the police force for dallying with a hooker, he sets himself up as a street peddler selling fruits and vegetables from a pushcart, much to the horror of his bourgeois family and his socially conscious lover, who leaves him in disgust. Settling for a loveless marriage with a manipulative wife (Irm Hermann), Hans sinks into depression and ill health and finally falls silent as his new partner quietly usurps his place. It’s a chilly but compelling portrait of a mercenary, often unfeeling family desperate to grab a piece of the economic boom, and Fassbinder invests it with a mix of street realism, melodrama, black comedy, and theatrical flourish. At the center is Hans, a prisoner of an unhappy life except for the moments he takes his cart to the streets and calls out his wares like a character in some working-class opera—until even that is denied him and he embarks on a special, utterly Fassbinderian escape. It’s an unforgettable climax to one of Fassbinder’s best films.
